Cubaneo Live

Thursday July 17th, 9:pm

Andrea's Cha Cha Club

Corner of SE Belmont And SE Grand

Portland, Oregon 97214

The most authentic Cuban Salsa venue in Portland. It is a small and dimly lit place in the basement of the karaoke bar-restaurant at the Grand Cafe. The walls are covered with nostalgic photos, as well as pictures of known singers and musicians. There is plenty of seating, and plenty of places to put down your drink as you are being asked to dance. With its full bar, and a good DJ, this place has consistently been kicking up some fun dance nights. Its tiny dance floor fills with folks who know how to work their hips to the max. Dance lessons for those of us who need them. Lots of fun, if you're not claustrophobic. 70's disco Sun, Latin other nights.
Open Wed-Sun.

About Cubaneo:

Playing a diverse repertory of Latin songs emphasizing Cuban compositions from the 1900s to today, Portland-based Cubaneo embodies the heartbeat of Cuba. The group’s diversity of music styles (son, cha-cha, salsa, Latin jazz) reflects the diversity of audiences and venues that Cubaneo has embraced throughout the Portland Metropolitan area. With fans ranging from dedicated ballroom dancers to Lewis and Clark students and everyone in between, Cubaneo’s blend of tropical rhythms and voices has diners and dancers excited about Latin music.

Since its beginnings, Cubaneo’s sound has filled both small and large venues. For nearly two years, Cubaneo’s small ensemble (4-5 members) has performed at Salvador Molly’s restaurants (East and West). In addition, the band has a loyal following every Thursday evening at Andrea’s Cha Cha Club and brings dancers and fans to locations including NW 23rd’s Santa Fe Taqueria, Aztec Willie’s, and Mississippi Pizza Pub. Cubaneo also performs for larger industry events, such as Portland Community Media’s recent 25th Anniversary Celebration and the upcoming 2007 NW Salsa Awards.

Cubaneo currently has a minimum of 5 people for more intimate settings and a maximum of 10 people for a big band sound. The 5-member group includes guitar, piano, sax, congas, and vocals. The 10-member group has additional percussion, brass, and bass. Engaging, creative, and passionate, Cubaneo reflects the heart of the music and the heart of the people, introducing the community to Cuban culture and a Cuban love for life.
